Inpatient Echo Ordering Instructions

In order to appropriately order an inpatient echo, you must do a few things:

  1. Select CV Echocardiogram TransTHORACIC. If you select transesophageal, you have selected wrong and the echo won’t get done.

  2. For inpatient TTEs, it must be ordered as STAT. If you don’t order it STAT, then the echo techs won’t see the order appropriately and in a way that tells them it needs to be done for an inpatient, and thus delaying patient care.

  3. If you need a TransESOPHAGEAL echo, you must call/consult CCU service and discuss the case with them. Simply ordering it in Genesis will NOT have the TEE done since it is a procedure and requires CCU consultation and coordination.

If you have any questions about how to order this properly, ask your Resident, your Attending, or the Chiefs of Residents.
