Need blood for Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP)?!

michaelpfanning

Current hospital Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) procedures/SOP is under review due to recent confusion between the Wards/ICU and Blood Bank. For now, please follow the below procedures when calling a MTP while inpatient:

  1. Always first evaluate the patient!

  2. If decision is made that MTP is needed, please instruct nursing staff to call MTP!

  3. Calling the MTP will have it get called overhead and notify the blood bank/lab, but this does NOT automatically get blood products to bedside!

  4. For now, the following 2 orders MUST also be placed in the computer for the appropriate blood products to be released:

    1. "Massive Transfusion (Massive Transfusion Protocol)"

    2. "Emergency Release (Emergency Release)"

  5. Given your TOP priority is providing direct patient care at the bedside during a scenarior where a MTP is indicated, the Charge Nurses on each of the Wards and in the ICU are able to put these 2 orders in the computer via verbal orders under your name.

Again, these processes are actively under review to better allow for prompt, efficient, and safe patient care. If/When these policies are updated and change, we will let you know!
